To put it mildly, the soundtrack of Rascals is perfectly in tune with the kind of movie you expect it to be from the trailers. To be not so euphemistic about it, the soundtrack is easily the worst work from composers Vishal Shekhar. For starters Rascals doesn’t even seem to be a movie deserving a score from people of V-S’s calibre. I was quite surprised to see their name on credits. And the songs do come off as uncharacteristic of the duo, devoid of any depth and at times cacophonous.
Slightly better of the four songs is Shake It Saiyyan sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Haji Springer, where the composers provide a fairly engaging template to a folksy lead tune, and a creative use of second vocals to the lead refrain as well. The hip hop mix is also on an equal footing with the original. The second best track is Pardah Nasheen, due mainly to the singers Neeraj Sridhar and Sunidhi. The other two tracks — Tik Tuk by Daler Mehndi and Monali Thakur, and the title song by Neeraj Sridhar — are middling.
A soundtrack that I guess even Vishal Shekhar would want to forget soon about. Hopefully Ra.One has enough fodder to quicken that process — Dildara sounds promising.
Music Aloud Rating — 4.5/10
Top Recos — Shake It Saiyyan, if you really feel like it.
