Sukhwinder Singh gets another track from Vishal Bhardwaj and Gulzar to add to the Fataak/Bismil line of songs in Patli Gali, the song is quite evocative of such past works (and of some others like Jhoom Barabar Jhoom) in its general feel. And the charm wears off rather soon with this one despite the energy. The soundtrack takes on a minimal, pensive mode for the rest of the songs however. Zinda is of the kind that Vishal himself generally sings, but here he gets Rekha Bhardwaj to do the honours and she conveys the pained wistfulness in Gulzar’s lines with finesse. The background is mostly comprised of a haunting guitar refrain (Mayukh Sarkar), joined at various points by accordion and violin phrases that accentuate the melancholy.
Shaam Ke Saaye also falls under the same category as Zinda. The tune is not as compelling, but the song does manage to impress thanks to an intriguing arrangement (once again big role by the guitars, nylon guitar by Tushar Parte in the lead this time) and Arijit Singh’s whispery singing. The song of the soundtrack is Insaaf. VB gets US-based Pakistani singer Arooj Aftab for this one and she completely owns the beautiful tune even as the composer produces a suspenseful piano+strings arrangement in the backdrop (lovely cameo from Sabir Khan with his sarangi in the interlude) – complete winning package this one!
