Singers Anwar Khan Manganiyar, Swaroop Khan and Niyaz Khan power through the traditional folk piece Mehandi even as composer Tapas Relia cleverly infuses reggae elements into the folk orchestration (Dilshad Khan’s sarangi and Jasu Khan Manganiyar’s khartal are a delight to listen to!). The best Manganiyar to appear on the soundtrack is a much younger one, 14 year old Devu Khan Manganiyar who joins Chet Dixon with his fabulous rendition of Dum-A-Dum Mast Qalandar in Relia’s own take on the oft-covered track. Pretty neat adaptation that again sees a smooth mix of Western and Rajasthani elements. Jeene Se Bhi Zyaada doesn’t carry a particularly fresh sound, but it has its sprightly pace and exceptional singing by Shivamm Pathak to make it worth your while.
Singers who delivered the composer’s best songs in his last work with Nagesh Kukunoor get to reprise their act in Dhanak as well. Papon is joined by Vibha Saraf and Shivamm Pathak in the breezy and wonderfully orchestrated Chal Chalein – a song should make for a perfect new addition to your roadtrip playlist. And Monali Thakur gets the movie’s simple, sweet title song. Which she delivers beautifully of course, and the arrangement backs the melody with fitting tenderness and adequate sprinkling of folk elements – Paras Nath’s flute and Dilshad Khan’s sarangi constituting the folk side. Theme to Dhanak is, well, thematic and should work well as a BGM track.
Dhanak. Tapas Relia delivers another fine soundtrack for Nagesh Kukunoor.
