Songs and complete credits at the end.
Composer Dheerendra Doss’s (who happens to be drummer of Bangalore-based parody rock band Live Banned) film debut gets off to a happy start with Mugilu Matte Matte largely riding on Doss’s bandmate guitarist Sridhar Hariharan’s strings (guitars, uke and bouzouki) but also a refreshingly hummable tune that is sung well by Joel Dubba (really liked the double tracking of his voice). The song makes a reappearance after a short prelude in Teerada Joteyali that once again starts on a light-hearted note before the heavier rock elements kick in. Joel once again leads the vocals, but this time the harmonic layer is supplied by a female voice, Sowmya Subramanian and the combination works fabulously.
The remaining three songs feature on vocals the movie’s leading lady Adithi Kalkunte. The lady’s singing isn’t without flaws when it comes to the finer nuances, but she totally nails the attitude while delivering The Breakup Song. Composer’s rock-flavoured orchestration too works very well in conveying the import of Chirasu’s lines. Yaarigu Helonu Byaada features a guest composer, Live Banned frontman Amrit Rao. Dheerendra treats Amrit’s simple melody in an unplugged fashion; just Sridhar’s guitar to support Adithi’s voice. In the alternate version titled Yaarigu and All That Jazz, Dheerendra sets the same lines (written by Da Ra Bendre) to a retro jazz flavoured tune and arrangement, one that reminds me at times of Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh. Despite that aspect though, this version trumps the unplugged one; Adithi does exceptionally well here.
Puta Tirugisi Nodi. Dheerendra Doss’s film debut is very indie in sound (unsurprisingly), and highly engaging! Also good to see each of the Live Banned members bring out their non wacky musical side. 🙂
