Pass Nahi Toh Fail Nahi is a perfect ode to the season where a lot of students (and parents) are going through the nail-biting wait for exam results. Vayu’s quirky lines and Sachin Jigar’s light-hearted music combine to produce a catchy piece that is delivered in style by Sunidhi Chauhan, fresh from that sprightly song she delivered for A R Rahman in Dil Bechara. Sachin Jigar have given some beautiful melodies to Shreya Ghoshal in the last ten years or so (Saibo, one of the earliest, is an all-time favourite) – in Shakuntala Devi the team adds another one to that list with Paheli. Penned by Priya Saraiya, Shreya is on point with her deliver of this tender piece on the daughter-mother relationship. Composers go retro for the remaining two songs, both seeming to draw from the style of a composer who is one of the favourites when channelling the yesteryear sound – O P Nayyar. Sunidhi Chauhan is once again in fabulous form in the groovy Rani Hindustani that sees some lovely accordion throughout its length. It comes as no surprise to see Mikey McCleary as the arranger for this song – man has always excelled at such songs. Incidentally, McCleary was the composer of director Anu Menon’s last film, Waiting (really nice soundtrack, if you haven’t heard it yet). Benny Dayal and Monali Thakur sing Jhilmil Piya that evokes memories of Babuji Dheere Chalna, except for the elaborate horns-led interludes. Very enjoyable and well-sung song, yet again.
