Thus, a very strange year – likely the strangest in most of our lifetimes – is about to come to an end. A year that, at least for me, underlined the value of music – it would have been quite difficult to maintain sanity through the barrage of terrible news that hit us this year, without music. Thankfully there was a fair bit of quality music that came our way as well, this year, despite the few number of movie releases. In fact the reduced number of movies meant a glut of songs in the non-film space, so much so that I have created a separate category this time, to cover music from web series. Onto the lists, then – hopefully due to the lockdown etc you will have enough time to check out these lists at length 🙂 Wish you all a happy and a much more normal 2021!
As usual, I have gone by movie release calendar, and single release date for the indie/indipop list. Also, Music Aloud is now on Spotify as well, so this year the playlists will be available on Apple Music, Youtube and Spotify.
And thanks as always to the awesome @cookydoh for the artwork!
Bollywood
It is incredible that it took a pandemic to improve the musical situation in Bollywood! With the OTT releases etc, there was of course a shift in the whole dynamics, but this was a year of quality over quantity for Hindi music (film and non-film). Most heartening to see was the drop in the remix trend – this could of course be a temporary thing, but one can always hope! Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Pritam and A R Rahman were responsible for a lot of the amazing songs that came out this year, but there was also some great music from other old timers (Sandesh Shandilya, Sachin Jigar etc), debutants (Anshuman Mukherjee, Anuj Garg, Shubham Shirule etc) and the in-betweeners (Amartya Rahut, Ankur Tewari etc). I am a bit gutted about having to leave out one of my favourites from the year, 99 Songs, from the roundup since the movie isn’t out yet. Hoping that I can feature it next year.

Malayalam
One of the happiest things for me in Malayalam music this year was to see composer Alphonse Joseph make a big return with Anoop Sathyan’s Varane Aavashyamundu (he did do a couple of lower profile films last year) – but the whole covid situation meant that the album did not receive the credit it deserved. The year’s top composers otherwise were Jakes Bejoy – who delivered one of his career-best soundtracks in Ayyappanum Koshiyum, and Prashant Pillai, whose fab work in Saajan Bakery Since 1962 is another favourite I am having to sadly skip in my roundup owing to the movie not having released. There were some promising debutants as well – Rex Vijayan’s brother Jackson Vijayan, Srihari K Nair, Sumesh Somasundar being a few names that found their way into the list.

Tamil
Continuing his fine composing form from last year, G V Prakash Kumar delivered some excellent tracks this year as well in the two movies he featured in. Other composers who had a good year were Govind Vasantha (on his own, and as Thaikkudam Bridge, courtesy the one adapted song in Soorarai Pottru), Santhosh Narayanan, Vishal Chandrasekhar, Girishh Gopalakrishnan, Leon James and singers Sid Sriram and Vijaynarain, both making their composing debut. There was also the rare instance of a multicomposer soundtrack in the Vicky Donor-remake Dharala Prabhu, which turned out to be a wonderful set of songs as well. My favourite song of the year came from Ilaiyaraja though, in Psycho.

Indian Indie/Pop
One of the biggest beneficiaries of the slump that movie industries faced, the indie/indipop playlist is the one I had the most difficulty picking this year. There was a lot of amazing music from across languages, even featuring quite a few big names from the film industry. This list, as always, only covers the music that I managed to catch up on in 2020, there could be a lot of great Indipop music that I have missed out on, so apologies in advance for that.

Web Series
It was great to see a lot of quality music in the web series space, and more importantly, to see them made available on all streaming platforms. And that is why this is a new category in the roundup this time around. Once again there were some big names at play – Anoushka Shankar (A Suitable Boy), Shankar Ehsaan Loy (Bandish Bandits), Pritam (The Forgotten Army)… The playlist is largely made up of Hindi songs, with a smattering of Bengali and Tamil. I have also included a series from 2019, Cheesecake, since I discovered it only this year and the music by Santanu Ghatak (you will remember him from Tumhari Sulu’s Rafu) was too good to pass up.

Other Language Films
You will find a dominance of Telugu songs in this list, since I happened to watch a lot of Telugu films during the lockdown period. The usual suspects from the industry mostly had a good year, but the list is obviously topped by Thaman with his blockbuster soundtrack for Alaa Vaikunthapurramuloo. Malayali composers Bijibal and Govind Vasantha had their Telugu debuts with the remakes of Maheshinte Prathikaaram and 96 respectively, and both of them did fabulously, producing songs that clearly drew from the originals but were fresh all the same. There was some exceptional music in Marathi as well, particularly from the man who is fast becoming my favourite composer from the industry – A V Prafullachandra. If you haven’t come across his music, you have got to check them out, particularly for the arrangements – man’s incredibly innovative at it! Also, no ranking in this one; I have just listed the songs by language
